Mysore Style / description:
In a Mysore-style class each student practices at their own pace, led by and anchored in their own smooth breathing rhythm, following the structure of one of the Ashtanga sequences, as they have been taught, up to place where they have been instructed by the teacher. The teacher is not required to stand at the front and provide instruction to all students simultaneously, they are free to help each student individually, in a quiet, introspective atmosphere, giving both verbal and physical adjustments to guide students towards a balance between effort and ease in each pose, and to provide clarity around key actions and alignment in the pose. The teacher, over time, gives each student further poses to practice, usually adding only one or two extra poses at a time, to keep students challenged. In this held space students have the opportunity to develop their concentration as a tool for experiencing glimpses of silence, each moment of silence allowing our identification with a limited sense of self to soften and resulting in a grounded, expansiveness.
Mysore with Joey Miles
Every Friday 7 - 9am. No booking required, just show up!
Plus, monthly workshops to dive deeper into the practise (Sundays)
Joey began his practice in 1998 after a misspent youth pursuing the circus, martial arts & physical theatre. Whilst at Goldsmiths studying drama, he set up the Yoga Society. On graduating he assisted Hamish Hendry at Astanga Yoga London for 3 years. During this time he spent 3 months a year in Mysore with Pattabhi Jois & Sharath.
In 2004 he was authorised to teach the primary series by Pattabhi Jois & following that taught the Mysore program from 2005-2008 at Triyoga in Primrose Hill, London. In 2009 he relocated to Hebden Bridge & set up Ashtanga Yoga Leeds. In 2012 Joey received authorisation level 2, gaining Sharath’s blessing to teach the full Intermediate Series. In 2014, Joey completed the 3rd series under Sharath Jois’ guidance at the KPJAYI in Mysore.
Joey has also practiced Iyengar yoga with Alaric Newcombe for 20 years. This process of combining different perspectives has been invaluable for learning to adapt and modify ‘traditional’ ashtanga to make it more accessible; not only as people begin but also as they age.
Between 2019 & 2022 he trained in person-centred counselling & volunteers with Noah’s Ark. He has practiced silent sitting meditation in the Vipassana tradition & currently practices Zen under the guidance of Sandy Chubb.
